About the Band
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Practice
sessions are held once a week on Monday evenings 7.30 - 9.00pm
in Kingston.
An annual weekend training camp plus additional practices
are used to prepare display routines for competition. The
Band performs in national BYBA competitions as well as attending
local functions, fetes, and carnivals, sometimes at the request
of the Royal Borough. A full repertoire of music is taught
which includes traditional marches, film themes, and pop standards.
Potential
members do not require any prior musical knowledge, instruments
are provided at no charge, full musical & drill instruction
is given. The special Scout/Guide Band uniform is also provided.
The
instructors are assisted by an enthusiastic supporter group
who organise fund raising events as well as helping with the
care of uniforms and equipment.
The
Band promotes the aims of the Scout & Guide Associations
and helps its members to develop by having fun, travelling,
being part of a disciplined team and meeting new challenges
in a friendly competitive atmosphere.
Older
members are actively encouraged to participate in the management
of the Band. They pass on their skills by training younger
members, this develops their leadership and coaching skills
to become (band) leaders of the future.
